Berkeley Heights, New Jersey has a history dating to its incorporation in 1809 (as “New Providence Township” – renamed in 1951) – the township was named for John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton – one of the founders of the province of New Jersey, so elected the town’s namesake in a referendum in 1951.
